Patrick Foulis, Foreign Editor, The Economist, was our guest speaker at Odgers Berndtson’s annual CFO and Audit Chair dinner. With over 300 attendees including some of the country’s most prominent CFOs and Chairs, the discussion explored various issues affecting the international business landscape, including leadership challenges, economic trends, and geopolitical risks.
Geopolitical and economic challenges
The discussion outlined current geopolitical risks, particularly tensions between major powers and their impact on business strategies and the implications for global stability. The increasing risk of regional wars was noted in relation to maintaining security and economic stability. Also emphasised was increasing cooperation among autocratic regimes and technological and economic shifts that are shaping the global commercial landscape.
The rise of populism in Western politics and its effect on economic policies was considered, highlighting that populist movements have led to a shift away from free markets towards greater government intervention.
Technological advancement and business resilience
Technology continues to play a significant role in shaping the global economy. The transformative potential of AI and green energy, which are driving investment and innovation, were considered alongside the associated commercial risks.
Despite the challenges, business has shown resilience and adaptability. The rewiring of globalisation, as seen in shipping and aviation industries, demonstrates how companies are adjusting to new realities.
The annual CFO dinner highlighted the complex and interrelated challenges facing the global economy and geopolitical landscape. The insights identified underscored the importance of effective leadership, resilience, and adaptability in navigating these uncertainties. As business continues to face a rapidly changing world, addressing and adapting to these challenges are crucial for a successful year ahead.
The Odgers Berndtson team would like to thank Patrick Foulis for his formidable address and engagement in the question-and-answer session that followed.
